In honor of National Peanut Month, our product spotlight for the month of March is Peggy's Peanut Brittle based in Troy, Alabama. Peggy Stephens began making her peanut brittle about 35 years ago just as a hobby, resulting from her love of cooking. As a mother of five girls there was not much time for turning her hobby into a profit though, until about three years ago. Originally, Peggy would cook her legendary peanut brittle for the locals around Troy whether it was as a gift or just to brighten someone’s day. After much prodding and begging, her friends finally convinced her to take her peanut brittle hobby to the next level and sell it. So finally in October of 2006, Peggy got her license, a new kitchen, and began making her locally well known peanut brittle for everyone to enjoy!
With the help of her daughter Sabrina, Peggy not only made peanut brittle, but also expanded her line of candies to include Pecan Brittle. Inheriting the entrepreneurial spirit of her mother, Peggy’s other daughter Lisa began making tea cakes as well under the same line and is selling them in most stores where her mother’s peanut and pecan brittle is sold. Peggy’s Peanut Brittle and Lisa’s Tea Cakes come in three different sizes which range from snack size for $2.00, a 16 oz. container for $10.00 and a ½ gallon container for $17.00. Also for an affordable price, Peggy’s Pecan Brittle comes in a snack size for $2.50, a 16 oz. container for $12.00 and a ½ gallon container for $19.00. You can find Peggy’s peanut brittle mostly in Central/South Alabama throughout gourmet gifts shops and convenience stations. Steak Out is just on of the newest customers of Peggy’s Peanut Brittle who tasted the goodness of her candy and just had to sell it, even in a steak restaurant! Peggy currently sells her peanut brittle in 19 stores in Southeast Alabama but is expanding into approximately 15-20 more in the near future. Peggy’s favorite “peanut brittle” moment recently was when she and her family visited “Lady and Sons,” Paula Dean’s restaurant in Savannah, Georgia and she ran into Paul’s two sons, Bobby and Jamie Dean in the gift store. Well, Peggy just happened to have some of her Alabama peanut brittle on her at the time and let the two sons taste it. Moment’s later, Bobby walked across the store, tapped Peggy on the shoulder and told her that it was the best peanut brittle he had ever tasted since it was so thin! It must not get much better if Paula Dean’s son approved it himself! So if you want to get your hands on some yummy peanut brittle, pecan brittle or tea cakes, call Peggy at 334-372-0618 or 334-566-7593.
