 Mama Nems Food Products - Made with Pride in Thomaston, Alabama by the Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation
The Alabama Rural Heritage Foundation & Center is located in Thomaston at the former Marengo County High School. The Rural Heritage Center began as a foundation for the purpose of celebrating rural heritage and providing opportunities for cultural and economic development of rural citizens. In August of 2003, the Rural Heritage Foundation formed a partnership with the Rural Studio of Auburn University where five architecture students from the university constructed a new 5,000 square foot facility. Housed in this building are the Rural Heritage Center, The Heritage Shoppe and a Restaurant.
In order to promote rural Alabama, the Heritage Shoppe showcases a variety of crafts all made by native Alabama artisans including items such as handmade quilts, pottery, baskets and paintings. But most unique is the “Mama Nems” Food Products which is a line of green pepper jelly, red pepper jelly and watermelon rind pickles. All of these delicious food items are created from produce grown on-site in the Center’s garden and prepared in the Center’s kitchen to further enhance the local flair of the Center.
The Center is open to visitors from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday and is a wonderful, unique experience for kids and adults alike! In just one visit, you will be filled with awe over how many local, talented craftsmen we have here in Alabama. And while you are there, make sure you have a tasty lunch in the café and don’t forget to try the delicious pepper jelly on warm cream cheese, it is a “can’t miss!”
