The Food Safety Section is under the direction of Lance M. Hester. The section’s responsibilities are primarily regulatory in nature and serve to assure safe quality products for our Alabama consumers. The activities of the Food Safety Section are carried out by three units: (1) Food Safety Inspection, (2) Food and Drug Laboratory, and (3) Pesticide Residue Laboratory. The Alabama Safe Foods Act of 2000, which was passed by the Alabama Legislature and went into effect July 1, 2000, provides for the permitting by this department of those food sales establishments that store or sell Class A foods (baby food, infant formula, meat, or dairy products). Additionally, provisions are included for the assessment of monetary penalties for violations of excessive date expired Class A foods or selling misbranded or adulterated products.
